Crime information made available to the public

The North Platte Police Department is using new technology to keep community members informed about crimes happening in their neighborhoods. It's joined forces with the National Crime Map, which posts crimes, the areas they occurred in and the times they happened online at CrimeReports.com.

The data is also available via an iPhone application that can be downloaded for free from the Apple iTunes store. The service provides up-to-date crime information for the city 24-hours per day.

"Information is power," said police chief Martin Gutschenritter. "And we hope that giving the community this information will help them prevent crime in their neighborhoods."

"The North Platte Police Department is a leader in law enforcement innovation," said Greg Whisenant, founder and CEO of CrimeReports. "They are demonstrating their commitment to the community, to proactive policing and fiscal responsibility."

North Platte joins a list of more than 700 other law enforcement agencies across the country who share their crime information with the public. The Web site also shows registered sex offender locations and allows people to sign up for daily, weekly or monthly email alerts.
